LOCUM DOCTOR IN BROOME

The pearl of the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, no visit to this part of the world is complete without a stay working as a locum doctor in Broome. Blugibbon’s locum doctors seem to agree, and it is often one of the first locations they ask about when looking to locum. Thankfully there are locum jobs there regularly, and Dr Marco was happy to fill us in on everything you need to know.

WHAT IS THE SETUP LIKE FOR LOCUM DOCTOR IN BROOME?

The experience was first-class. The Broome Emergency Department has 14 beds with two resus bays, eight major beds, six minors, a quick-care room and a mental health room.
Generally it is a GP-run hospital, with GP specialists running theatres, HDU and maternity. There are locum fly-in-fly-out Surgeons that have a much broader scope of practice given its rural location. Referrals span a wide area from Kununurra to Coral Bay. And the medicine is interesting with a large amount of indigenous health and people often presenting late from remote communities.
Acuity is varied, often with many General Practice-type presentations. However, Broome gets its fair share of sick patients. And with that, you are well supported by GP Anaesthetists and RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service) retrievals are not infrequent.
Most importantly the staff are awesome. The hospital is full of some very experienced doctors and nurses and an overall great working atmosphere.

ANY LOCALS’ INSIDE INFO? WHAT DO YOU DO DURING YOUR TIME OFF, IN BROOME?

Broome is truly amazing, with a good number of restaurants and watering holes. Aarli cafe and Matso’s brewery were two of our favourites. Depending on the time of the year, there are a few festivals on and recently we were there when Shinju Matsuri was on. There is always a bit of a buzz for “Staircase to the Moon” where a full moon gives a staircase effect on the mud flats.
Broome is a fantastic spot to launch out to some of the most beautiful parts of Australia. Including Gibb River Road, Horizontal Falls and Cape Leveque. With a few more days’ drive, you can get to Karijini and Exmouth that are both sensational locations. Just be aware that when planning a trip to Broome some roads may be closed during the wet season.

Here at Blugibbon we understand 2020 has been a challenge for most  Locum Doctors  here in Australia. If you have questions around your visa situation, AHPRA registration or if your looking for the best locum Doctor jobs on the market, we can help.

Hi, it’s Jay from Blugibbon. I’ve worked in psychiatry recruitment for more than eight years, and since relocating to Australia, I’ve noticed something that keeps coming up. Emergency doctors make outstanding psychiatrists. It isn’t a one-off observation. I’ve seen it repeatedly in hospitals across the country. The core skill set of an emergency physician translates naturally into psychiatry, particularly in crisis care and acute mental health settings. If you want an inspiring example, listen to Dr Katie Treble on ABC Conversations as she shares her journey from emergency medicine to psychiatry. It’s a brilliant insight into what this transition can look like in real life.
